Olsen / Advocate Enterprises, Ltd., has developed diverse software products for clients, graphic artists and the general public since 1985. Other than dedicated software expressly written for a client, products come in two "flavors": registered for full usage by the end user and "try-before-buying" shareware. These categories and a sampler of our products are outlined in this file. For further information on these or custom products, please contact us. (Address and phone appear in last section of file.) Product descriptions, fees and other information contained herein are subject to change without notice. While every effort is made to assure accuracy, nothing contained herein shall be deemed to supersede restrict or otherwise modify the terms and conditions found within the license agreement provided with each product. REQUIREMENTS OPERATING SYSTEM: MS-DOS/PC-DOS (v. 2.0 or later) or CP/M (any version). For MS-DOS or PC-DOS, specify 5.25" or 3.5" disks. For CP/M, specify computer make/model (submission of a copy of the video codes page from your operator's manual is recommended). MEMORY: 128K for products with a filetype of ".EXE," 64K for products with a filetype of ".COM." DISK CAPACITY: One floppy or hard disk. (Hard disk recommended for 9 O'CLOCK.) REGISTERED: Normal licenses permit a single user (at home, office-- wherever) OR all users at a single, fixed site (but not both) to use a given product. Example: You work in a department with four users, one of whom uses a product at both home and office. You need two licensed copies, a single-user license for the home/office user and a single- site license for all office-only users. SHAREWARE: This is a distribution concept which has been rapidly growing in popularity. It places trust in you, the user. A shareware product generally is essentially the same as its registered counterpart but is distributed under special "try-before-buying" terms defined by the copyright holder. If you use the product, you send for a registration license. That's it--nothing to return, no hassles. Nothing could be simpler and everyone gains. But please note that keeping your end of the bargain is more than a legal commitment, it is an ethical one. Authors continue to distribute via shareware (an economical way to promote their products) only so long as users follow through on their part of the arrangement. If a shareware approach doesn't pay the rent, you find products that turn commercial--and we all lose. Please remember that if you obtain a shareware product from a third party, you have NOT bought the product or registered it. You've merely paid someone for the convenience of finding, possibly testing, advertising, copying and shipping. Not bad for $10 or less! But the shareware author has, at that point, not been paid a single penny. (In fact, s/he has gone to some expense just to get the product to you for evaluation.) If anyone has misled you about this fact or you paid more than $10 for any Advocate Enterprises shareware product, please notify us. So what do you get when you do register a shareware product? 1) The latest, full-featured version and all associated materials. (We are among the most active developers; unlike some others, we enhance products virtually every month.) 2) When appropriate, a configuration program to change a product so its default condition is to function in user-preferred ways rather than as released. (E.g., ADIR's default is to display files alphabetically; this may be changed to display them by filesize or filetype without specifically requesting this when the program runs.) Or, if applicable (see individual program's documentation), you may enclose a copy of your favorite Configuration File of preferences and they'll be included as automatic "default" settings when you run the program. 3) When appropriate, a conversion program to alter Configuration Files created with prior versions to the format used by the latest version. 4) Telephone and 24-hr. computer modem call-in support. 5) Notification of enhancements, and receipt of same for the cost of copying/shipping ($10 as of this writing). 6) For some products, the right to earn a tidy Finders Fee for introducing others to us. 7) The satisfaction which only comes with integrity, and the knowledge you are supporting the continuation of no-risk shareware products. FORTHCOMING These products have yet to be officially released to the public. Through this "advance-reservation" option, you gain several advantages: 1) License fees are generally much less than the anticipated fee when the product will be released. 2) You receive the first official release of the product IMMEDIATELY. The lag time between release and availability through normal channels generally involves several months while distributors print catalogs, place orders, etc. During that time, you'll have full access to the new capabilities. 3) Prior to formal release, we usually prepare interim versions which will generally be sent to you. Not only does this provide you with even earlier access to new capabilities, but it gives you the unique opportunity to influence what enhancements are added before formal release. In other words, you help the program become what YOU want it to be. And, you'll be aiding others in the user-supported software community at the same time. Inquire about any product marked forthcoming [F]. If still available for prerelease registration, we'll quote a nominal fee (usually $20-25) to cover sending the interim and first formal release versions to you. If it has been officially released, we'll quote the registration fee. ~ (Section 2) << PRODUCTS FOR GENERAL COMPUTING NEEDS >> (Note: Codes at the end of each product description are defined in Section 1.) ADVOCATE DIRECTORY UTILITIES (MS-DOS/PC-DOS only): If you've been unsatisfied with programs to manage your directories yet didn't want to run a large, sluggish, memory-hogging program or shell, DIRUTILS are for you! Member programs--which may be executed separately or from a shell/menu program of your own, and which may be licensed together or separately--are small, extremely fast yet exceptionally powerful and innovative. ADIR, The Multi-Path Directory Sorting & Display Program, can be used like any other sophisticated DIR program for a fast, uncluttered directory of filenames and filesizes. But it really shines when you want to COMPARE directories, or different groups of files in the same directory. You may select up to FOUR file specifications. For example, "ADIR *.COM *.EXE *.BAT" displays all executable files on the current drive, something like this: ADIR v. 1.15 Path 1: *.COM Path 2: *.EXE Path 3: *.BAT ========== 1 ============ 2 ============= 3 ============= 4 =========== ADIR.COM 9911 | YOUR.EXE 110289 | YOUR.BAT 128 | YOUR.COM 10201 | | | ======================================================================= 1: 2 file(s) of 20112 bytes (20 kilobytes used, 4922 free) 2: 1 file(s) of 110289 bytes (108 kilobytes used, 4922 free) 3: 1 file(s) of 128 bytes (1 kilobyte used, 4922 free) "ADIR A: C:\UTILS" might check a subdirectory on your hard disk against a floppy's contents. If a single specification is entered, matching files display across all four columns; if two specs are entered, matching files of each are displayed two-across. For three or four specs, each is given a dedicated column. ASCOUT is THE "file-finder" against which all others must be compared. You can search for MULTIPLE file specifications--on MULTIPLE drives, "normal" or "close approximation" (files with names which are spelled or sound like your request) searches, and you can specify a BEGINNING directory for the search to avoid searching an entire drive). And with a copyrighted algorithm, you can restrict "matched" filenames to certain dates--BEFORE, SINCE or on a given date . . . even BETWEEN two dates! All of these various features can easily be combined in a single request. NO other program comes close! ATREE is similar to your operating system's TREE program but is about twice as fast and far more useful. (We gave up on using "tree" programs until we wrote ATREE.) Its display is far more compact yet more readable than TREE. And its display includes handy enumeration, full path to each directory on the same line, amount of disk space and percentage of the drive it occupies, followed by a summary of total number of directories, space occupied and total percentage occupied. And more . . . . CDX (Change Directory Extended): We believe this is the fastest change-directory program around. It also permits you to change drive AND directory in a single command, as simply as "CDX D:A". And unlike competitors which insist on slow "tree" displays which may require paging through several screens, CDX generally fits all directories on a single screen. You may use this display or avoid it entirely by entering your command at the operating-system prompt. (If you enter an erroneous command, the directory display and a prompt automatically appear.) And more! You'll find endless uses for DIRUTILS--and registered users of the full package receive future DIRUTILS programs when available for only a nominal shipping/ handling fee (currently $10). [R][S] QUICK EXTRACT, The Text-File Passage-Extraction Program: An essential tool for writers and software developers, QEXTRACT efficiently gathers and copies user-selected passages from an existing file to a new file without affecting the original. May be used as simply as entering filenames, yet provides various options for those who need them. Works with virtually ANY word processor or text editor. A "must-have" for anyone who works with text files of any kind. [R][S] QUICK HELP AND QUICK TEXT: Two separate programs for the price of one! You're using a dedicated version of QHELP right now, modified to run only AEORDER's text file. QTEXT.COM is a very small, fast, single-file alternative. The accompanying 1ST-TIME.COM program was produced from an ordinary text file by QTEXT in a few seconds. Both programs format and present ordinary text files created by virtually any word processor. QHELP automatically formats screen or printer output from a menu-driven environment. QTEXT is for simpler applications--often used for one- or two-screen text. QHELP can run an unlimited number of text files. For example, you might have a general text file with several sections, each providing a brief screen or two about, say, word processing, data processing, etc. In turn, each such section might end with a comment such as "type QHELP PROGRAMX to learn more about PROGRAMX." QHELP automatically finds and runs a default file ending with ".HLP" when the user types QHELP (which may be renamed HELP, if preferred). By appending the name of any file ending with the ".HLP" suffix (suffix may be omitted), that file is run instead. The file for the earlier example would be named PROGRAMX.HLP. Both programs are indispensable for providing "how-to" information for colleagues, family members and others using your computers or for whom you provide advice and assistance. Licenses are available for software developers and other distributors to include these programs with their products. [R][S] QWIKMATH (MS-DOS/PC-DOS only): The most comprehensive programmers' calculator on the market today--providing extensive features while being easy to use. It offers: * A complete range of arithmetic and bitwise operators. * Values may be entered in binary, octal, decimal or hexadecimal, with results always displayed in all radices (as well as their ASCII or extended scan code equivalents, where applicable). * A special "Character" value-entry mode lets you to press any ASCII or extended scan code key(s) and instantly see their values in all radices plus the visual character or symbol which would be displayed if that value were used for screen output. * Calculations can be in 32-bit, 16-bit and 8-bit values. * A 16-level "undo" feature can escape erroneous entries or let you experiment in a "what if" session without losing results of prior operations. * The ability to freely combine and move between all of the above conditions at the touch of a key. * Context-sensitive, built-in help screens. * Runs as a stand-alone or "stay-resident" program. (The user may freely alter the TSR "hotkey.") * After installation, results of the most recent operation and user configuration preferences are automatically saved. They may be used, discarded, or altered at will. [R][S] 9 O'CLOCK (MS-DOS/PC-DOS only): The COMPLETE time-tracking system--with extensive features yet easy to use. It can time nine simultaneous events--even when your computer is OFF! Each clock can have an attached note and tracking code. An alarm clock can pop up a reminder of your choice while foreground programs run. Available in two versions, 9 O'CLOCK PROFESSIONAL provides extensive billing features for later analysis or printout with the accompanying, advanced data base manager. For those who don't bill for their time, 9 O'CLOCK PERSONAL replaces financial functions with expanded clock attached-note capabilities. 9 O'CLOCK runs as a TSR (background) or stand-alone program, and can export data to files compatible with most word processor, data base and spreadsheet programs. Its own data base holds more than 2 billion records. 9 O'CLOCK PERSONAL: [R][S] 9 O'CLOCK PROFESSIONAL: [R] SENDIT! (MS-DOS/PC-DOS only): A total, automated system for software developers, distributors and others. For each of your products, tell SENDIT! ONCE exactly what you want it to do to send out and track distributed disks and it will do so the same way every time (unless you optionally alter commands at any time). It will, for example: 1) sense whether a destination disk is formatted, and if not, format it with your favorite formatting tool; 2) copy and/or unarchive all related files, again with your favorite utilities; 3) add an encrypted, automatically incrementing (if desired) registration number to files you designate; and 4) add desired registration information to a data file whose format you select. All steps are optional and may be freely commingled with any other commands you desire. Registration numbers are encrypted and added to files you designate, if any, with a special algorithm which won't interfere with programs written in ANY language, yet if desired your programs have full access to the registration number. No longer must you build a separate registration number scheme into each of your programs. SENDIT! (or your program) even can detect attempts to alter the post- compilation or post-assembling registration number. And it's quick! Registering SENDIT! provides a unique advantage. Its encryption algorithm looks to SENDIT!'s OWN registration number for a part of the encryption coding. So by default all users of shareware copies of SENDIT! may decrypt registration numbers created by other such users. Upon registration, only someone knowing the unique registration number of your copy (i.e., only you or Advocate Enterprises) may decrypt registration numbers of your products. Available in two editions. The basic edition, with all of the above features, is available as both shareware and registered software. The extended version will provide source code and discussion on the registration-number module found in the basic version. For even greater protection of SENDIT! users, the extended version will be available only as a registered product. EASYTYPE: Our flagship EZSYSTEM program, EASYTYPE, The Intelligent Word Processing to Typesetting Translator, converts files from virtually any word processing program directly into a typesetting file for virtually any typesetting system. All "soft" and "hard" line ends (those which wrap around during reformatting and those which don't) are preserved. All other codes are translated--NOT discarded or passed through unchecked as in most alternatives. "Open" and "close" quotation marks are converted perfectly--eliminating THAT headache forever. Macro keys, which add tremendous power if and when desired, are a keystroke away. Personal preferences can be saved to unlimited Configuration Files for future use. EASYTYPE is extremely easy to use, yet offers the most sophisticated capabilities for those who need them. We could say so much more about this product, but space confines us. We'll only add that unsolicited compliments have confirmed that EASYTYPE is better-- and faster--than the comparable product by the leading typesetting manufacturer itself. Once tried, you won't be able to get along without it. [R][S] EZREMAKE: Remember how problematic it was to remake selected passages after outputting type? You wasted time resetting the whole job. Or, you output a section but missed a critical code or bit of text? Or, you set changes separately and crossed your fingers nobody would use the unfixed original later? Or . . . .With EZREMAKE those days are gone forever. It extracts ONLY passages you want, automatically accompanied by the right formatting codes! Note: A comparable program, QEXTRACT, is available for ordinary word processor files which don't contain typesetting or desktop publishing codes. You can do so in various ways. Want "step-and-repeat" capabilities? With EZFORMAT, you've got it, with options to spare. Best of all, do you want to have TOTAL pagination control of a publication project? Here, this tool REALLY shines! EZFORMAT can break pages to a specified number of lines, add headers and footers (each of which may be varied for left- and right- hand pages and can be restyled at any point), leave a defined amount of for artwork to be stripped later and much, much more! Other features too numerous to list here include the ability to keep charts or any other text together as a unit rather than allow it to split across pages. And in all cases, you can later freely edit the file without affecting EZFORMAT's ability to reapply the same instructions again and again. Difficult to use? Not at all! The codes you insert probably are as easy as or easier than those you now use for your typesetting editor program. Most features even can be entered from an EZFORMAT menu, if you prefer.
